The fourth industrial revolution (4IR) is changing the way we live and work at an alarming rate. The pace of change we have seen has also been driven in part by the global corona virus pandemic. We have had to learn to adopt the use of technology in many aspects of our daily lives, in ways that were previously inconceivable. The use and increasing reliance on technology has seen many industries collapse with many jobs having undergone structural changes. As a result of this we have seen growth in the unemployment rate globally. Many companies have had to reconsider the way they conduct their business. At the heart of these considerations, is the question of digital readiness both in terms of processes as well as in existing talent pools. The new normal has given rise to the need for more technologically agile companies and employment pools. It is in this vein that the University of South Africa (UNISA) College of Education Centre for Continuing Education and Training, has partnered with Deviare to introduce the Online Digital Pedagogy.

UNISA is a long-standing institution which has educated thousands of South Africans through distance learning for many years. The institution, which is ranked among the top universities in the country, re-established The Centre for Continuing Education and Training in 2010. The aim of this new centre was to become the first-choice innovative centre for teacher in-service training in the country. Over the past five years, the centre has committed itself to providing quality classroom and community-based education and training programmes. Some of which are client-tailored training programmes and courses, that promote collaboration and networking among teachers, communities, national and provincial education departments, businesses, interested parties as well as other stakeholders.

Deviare is fast growing African technology firm founded by Baxolile Mabinya and Lubabalo Dyantyi, and based in Johannesburg, South Africa. At its core, this firm uses its enterprise digital platform capabilities and competencies for workforce skills transformation and technology services. By combining tested methodologies with technology platforms, Deviare helps organisations navigate their unique digital transformation journey. This digital firm thrives in our ever-changing digital world by equipping people and businesses with the necessary skills to operate with increased efficiency. Deviare believes that technology has the power to change people’s lives and seeks to be an institution that offers opportunities that develop the youth across the African continent.

It is UNISA and Deviare’s wealth of experience and competency that will be used in the partnership to alleviate the deficit of digital skills in South Africa. The first offering from the partnership comes in the form of the built for purpose Online Digital Pedagogy. This programme is made up of two learning paths, a short learning programme and workshop style bootcamps. The short learning programme is crafted to address the three primary digital competencies of Data Engineering, Cloud computing and Cyber Security by marrying together some of the fundamental aspects covered in these areas. The programme is set to run for a period of eight months to start off. Concurrent to this programme, bootcamps in Data Engineering and Cyber Security will be offered and they will each run for two months at a time.

The programmes will be offered online, through a medley of self-paced learning and instructor-led training with real industry-based assessments. The aim of Data Engineering the programme is to equip the learners with skills such as statistical analysis, hypothesis testing and data mining as well as encourage critical thinking and improving decision-making. These are essential concepts and tools required for the work of a data engineer.

The Data Engineering bootcamp will comprise of an immersive learning experience. Learners will be exposed key knowledge areas of data analytics and get to experience some of the most common tools used in industry, like SciPy and Python through the curriculum. The bootcamp comes with MICT SETA accreditation as a skills programme, which means that it is aligned to the national qualification’s framework.

When it comes to the Cloud Computing component of the short learning programme, the aim is to equip learners with the knowledge of the most common Azure services, including virtual machines, web apps, SQL databases, features of Azure Active Directory, and methods of integrating these elements with on-premises Active Directory. Furthermore, students will become conversant with cloud technology concepts and understand their application across various sectors. Cloud computing forms the core foundation of how services, including education, will be delivered in the future.

Cyber security is an overarching aspect that all professionals should understand and appreciate, irrespective of sector. The short learning programme equips one with the skill set to become a professional in the cyber security field and protect their organization against cyber threats and attacks. Modules like security, privacy, compliance and trust, will form part of this course. This short learning programme will offer foundational, intermediate and advanced security skills. The Cyber security bootcamp consists of immersive blended learning that is beginner-friendly and allows for self-paced learning. With over 500+ cyber/IT security jobs on offer in South Africa, this course offers a work-ready curriculum.

All the short learning programmes will assist in addressing the skill shortages in each respective field. With the world grappling with high levels of youth unemployment, it has become increasingly important to gain valuable skills that set you apart in the professional world. Deviare and UNISA have developed their programmes in such a way that participants at all levels of experience can apply. Through this partnership, Deviare and UNISA aim to encourage more young people and professionals to equip themselves with advanced technological skills, regardless of their level of expertise, to advance their careers. Looking at how rapidly the adoption of technology has occurred in the working world and changed the way we work, live and play, having a digital skill aligned qualification will become a distinguishing signal in the already impenetrable job market.
