There may not be enough jobs but there is plenty of work

Lubabalo Dyantyi is the founding partner of Deviare Pty Ltd. The accomplished executive with 17-years experience in the ICT industry has led complex business transformation initiatives over the years and built very strong leadership capabilities and skills in this space across both public and private sector client segments. Dyantyi joins Gugulethu Mfuphi on Kaya Biz, sharing some insight into the fact that there may not be enough jobs but there is plenty of work. According to Dyantyi, digital skills pipeline is the answer to youth unemployment. South Africa commemorates Youth Day on 16 June, and last Friday, 09 June, marked World Youth Skills Day.
“If you observe South Africa or Africa at large, you will see that we have been consumers of technology for the longest time, and not producers. We have been importers of tech, and I think what’s happening in this 4th industrial revolution, or this digital 4.0 is this ability for us to participate in these new emerging skills. It is however unfortunate that we still lag behind compared to other developing countries in areas such as Mathematics, Science, as well as Engineering skills. Which really become a proper platform for building these new digital skills, especially if you want to build these into products and compete globally.” - Lubabalo Dyantyi, founding partner of Deviare Pty Ltd.
Dyantyi says that more needs to be done from a government level to invest more in digital skills development initiatives to help combat the youth unemployment crisis. The youth unemployment rate in South Africa has hit a staggering 34.5% in the 1st quarter of 2022. As much as there is a scarcity of jobs in the country, Dyantyi feels like a particular focus on STEM subjects, that is, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, will play a crucial role in creating employment opportunities for the millions of unemployed South African youth.
