Providing unprecedented access to opportunities with Microsoft
The Deviare and Microsoft partnership is about much more than just skills development. It is about stemming the tide of youth unemployment by providing unprecedented access to new opportunities in the digital opportunity. Our primary focus is on preparing young South Africans with the digital growth skills they will need to compete and contribute to our economy and beyond in the next years.
Many of our beneficiaries secure employment as data analysts, cloud administrators, software developers and cyber security engineers while a few have been courageous enough to start their own businesses. Access to international technical accreditations, combined with customised soft skills forms the foundation of our efforts to empower young South Africans. Moreover, our Virtual Global Apprenticeship provides accredited candidates with international work experience aligned to their area of training. This has been revolutionary in building confidence and ensuring the outcomes of our programmes are valuable to candidates and employers alike.
Young South Africans must learn digital skills that will allow them to compete on a global scale. Taking advantage of the worldwide need for digital skills is the greatest long-term strategy for providing meaningful job prospects for young South Africans, according to the World Economic Forum. With Deviare's relationship with Microsoft, we hope to motivate people to take action and innovate in order to build scalable and sustainable capacity for our digital economy.

From Degrees to Skills: A Paradigm Shift in Hiring
Gone are the days when a university degree was the sole ticket to career success. Today, companies across diverse sectors, including technology, healthcare, and creative industries, are increasingly valuing practical skills and proven competencies over formal educational credentials. Industry giants like Google, Apple, and IBM are at the forefront of this trend, reducing degree prerequisites for many roles. According to a 2021 report by the Burning Glass Institute, there was a significant 46% drop in job postings requiring a university degree, signaling a shift towards skill-based qualifications.
Understanding Skill-Based Learning
Skill-based learning is an educational approach focused on developing specific skill sets directly applicable in professional settings, contrasting with traditional education's broad theoretical base. This method equips students with practical skills and competencies that are immediately valuable in the workforce, ensuring they are job-ready upon completion of their studies.
The core advantage of skill-based learning lies in its emphasis on practical application. Students engage in simulations, real-time projects, and industry placements, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. This hands-on approach bridges the gap between education and employment, fostering a workforce that is not only knowledgeable but also adept at applying their skills in practical contexts
