The Power of Perseverance and Hard Work
Deviare’s director Baxolile Mabinya would like to take a moment to share a truly inspirational story.
Ndiafhi’s story is not only exceptional. It is a reminder to all of us that with perseverance and hard work, we can overcome short-term obstacles and inspire those around us. Although his career in the technology industry is still young, his achievements confirm his raw talent and eagerness to learn.
I first encountered Ndiafhi as a faceless name on the applicant list to Deviare’s sponsored data science programme in 2018. He had an incomplete degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology and I was intrigued by his curiosity to learn about a field he had never heard of. His progress very quickly stood out and after months in the programme, we invited him and some of his fellow learners to the Deviare office to celebrate their achievement. His borrowed blue suit and yellow tie, tightly fitted to this tall, slim figure, soon caught my attention. Towards the end of the evening, he called me aside and told me about a fraud detection algorithm he was building in his spare time. He pleaded with me to loan him a laptop because as we were headed for the holidays, we would no longer have access to a laptop and connectivity to complete his algorithm. It is hard to say no to this kind of curiosity and dedication.
The image of this tall, intelligent young man never escaped me. When there was an opportunity for an internship at Deviare, he again stood out in the recruitment process and he was a natural fit. Ndiafhi was so dedicated that at the end of the internship, he was 1 of the 6 interns we offered employment to. He is now a support engineer at Deviare and he is utilising his data science skills to help us develop a data driven approach of supporting our clients. There is nothing better than having a team member who is reliable and takes full ownership of his tasks. If you listen to him and see his work, one would easily believe he has been plying his trade for a decade or more.
Ndiafhi’s trajectory was sparked by an uncertain application to a programme he knew very little about. It ignited an incredible growth path which is spreading like wildfire. This young man is unstoppable and Deviare is privileged to have Ndiafhi as part of the team.
Baxolile Mabinya, one of Deviare’s directors shares above his initial encounters with Ndiafhi and how he became part of the Deviare family. Please read about one of our very own Ndiafhi Munyai in an article detailing his success story when he was part of the sponsored skills training programme for Microsoft one of Deviare’s clients: https://www.microsoft.com/southafrica/skills/success-stories/ndiafhi-munyai.aspx
From Degrees to Skills: A Paradigm Shift in Hiring
Gone are the days when a university degree was the sole ticket to career success. Today, companies across diverse sectors, including technology, healthcare, and creative industries, are increasingly valuing practical skills and proven competencies over formal educational credentials. Industry giants like Google, Apple, and IBM are at the forefront of this trend, reducing degree prerequisites for many roles. According to a 2021 report by the Burning Glass Institute, there was a significant 46% drop in job postings requiring a university degree, signaling a shift towards skill-based qualifications.
Understanding Skill-Based Learning
Skill-based learning is an educational approach focused on developing specific skill sets directly applicable in professional settings, contrasting with traditional education's broad theoretical base. This method equips students with practical skills and competencies that are immediately valuable in the workforce, ensuring they are job-ready upon completion of their studies.
The core advantage of skill-based learning lies in its emphasis on practical application. Students engage in simulations, real-time projects, and industry placements, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. This hands-on approach bridges the gap between education and employment, fostering a workforce that is not only knowledgeable but also adept at applying their skills in practical contexts
